Right around the time that Clean Eatz will celebrate its second anniversary next January, owners Don Varady and Evonne White have plans to take their prepared meals on the road.
While they will not be operating a food truck in the traditional sense, the truck will make multiple stops throughout the area each week offering their packaged meals.
Clean Eatz currently offers packaged meals for pickup at its café located at 203 Racine Drive. In addition to choosing from a wide variety of meals prepared fresh each day in the café, customers also have the option of taking part in Clean Eatz’s packaged meal plans. After going online to see a new menu each Thursday, customers can customize their menus by Sunday, and the meals are available for pick up the following Monday.
The goal of the packaged meal plans is to provide customers with properly portioned meals with the right balance of protein, carbs and fats. Every low-sodium meal has less than than 500 calories and 10 grams of fat.
But now, in addition to taking the guesswork out of meal planning and portioning, the truck will make it even easier for customers to pick up their meals. It will park at several area gyms as well as locations in Carolina Beach, Porters Neck, downtown and Hampstead. Clean Eatz hopes to work with University of North Carolina Wilmington and New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
All of the packaged meals can be eaten at once or frozen. Some of Clean Eatz most popular packaged options are its Beef and Chicken Philly Wraps and the Cheeseburger and Hot Wing Bowls. The restaurant has recently developed a “Skinny Chicken Alfredo,” which it is in the process of trying to replicate with gluten-free noodles.
“We work very closely with our customers to make customized meal plans to accommodate their specific diets,” White said. “We have customers who are following all types of plans, from Weight Watchers to Paleo and everything in between.”
With the steady growth of both the café and the meal programs, as well as the launch of the new truck, Varady and White say they may soon need to find additional commercial kitchen space. They would like to keep the 60-seat café on Racine Drive but will likely need an additional kitchen to prepare the packaged meals for the truck.
“We’ve had some great success stories from some of our customers whose health has really improved just by changing their eating habits,” White said. “And that is really what is driving us to be accessible to as many people as possible.”
