Local Cornerstone Office Switches Affiliations

By Jenny Callison, posted Jul 31, 2014
Much remains the same with his operation, but Marc Gilson and his lending team are switching bank affiliations.

Gilson and Larry Brobst, Susan Watkins and Debbie Barnaby worked for Atlanta-based Cornerstone Bank until Wednesday. Thursday, Gilson announced they officially became a loan production unit of Georgia Banking Company, also an Atlanta-based institution.

“Georgia Banking Company is a very healthy, well-capitalized bank looking to increase its SBA lending,” Gilson said. “Its CEO, Elliott Miller, spearheaded this and approached us because of our volume. We were attractive to him.”

“I grew this into an office versus a one-man show,” Gilson said, noting that as the “one-man show” he generated more than $15 million in SBA 7(a) loans in 2013.

“As we grew, we were able to add staff. Year-to-date, we’ve made about $20 million in SBA loans, and we have another $15 million to $20 million in loans pending.”

In late March, the team moved from a small office on Oleander Drive into larger space at 1908 Eastwood Road, Suite 322 in Lumina Station. They are staying put – Georgia Banking Company took over the office lease, Gilson said – and all four team members keep their jobs. Even their job titles essentially remain the same under the new banner: Gilson is regional manager, Brobst is senior vice president, Watkins is loan closer and Barnaby is senior underwriter.

“We can lend anywhere, but we want to focus on this market,” Gilson said.
