Area Institutions Named To Top Banks Lists

By Jenny Callison, posted Oct 7, 2016

Several banks in the Wilmington market fared well on Q2 2016 rankings released recently by Banks Street Partners.

The Atlanta-based investment banking firm analyzed and ranked the top 50 banks in each state where it does business

Wilmington-based Live Oak Bank was eighth – as was Charlotte-based Park Sterling – on the Banks Street Partners’ ranking of banks headquartered in North Carolina. Yadkin Bank (Statesville) and Aquesta Bank (Cornelius) ranked sixth.

Other North Carolina banks with a Wilmington presence were:

Sound Bank (Morehead City)-10th

Select Bank (Dunn)-12th

BB&T (Winston-Salem)-14th

First South Bank (Washington)-17th

First Bank (Southern Pines)-19th

Bank of America (Charlotte)-19th

North State Bank (Raleigh)-21st

First Citizens Bank (Raleigh)-22nd

Two other banks with loan production offices in Wilmington ranked in the top half of the 50-bank listing. Kinston-based The Little Bank was fifth, and Southern Bank, headquartered in Mount Olive, was 24th.

Two out-of-state banks operating in Wilmington ranked first in their respective state listings. South State Bank topped the 50-bank overall rating in South Carolina, while Bank of the Ozarks held that position among Arkansas-based banks. CresCom ranked fifth in South Carolina, and SunTrust was 46th on the Georgia rankings.

Banks Street Partners calculated its rankings based on each bank’s total assets, net interest margins, noninterest income, total overhead, asset quality, return on average equity and return on average assets, according to the full rankings information on the firm’s website.
