BB&T holds the dominant position in the Wilmington area’s banking community based on deposits and number of offices, according to the most recent Deposit Market Share Report published by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
The list, published early this month, reflects deposits as of June 30. It includes 23 banking institutions represented in the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).
BB&T, with 22 offices in the Wilmington MSA, tops the list of local banks with more than $1.5 billion in deposits locally and holds a market share of just over 26 percent. Wells Fargo, including its Wachovia assets, comes in second in terms of deposits, with nearly $860 million.
Others in the FDIC’s top ten are First Citizens Bank & Trust ($665 million)*, Bank of America ($448 million), RBC Bank USA ($389 million), First FS & LA of Charleston ($276 million), Security Savings Bank ($236 million), Suntrust Bank ($220 million), First Bank ($210 million) and Live Oak Bank ($207 million).
