AARP Coastal and AARP Foundation announced several award honorees at a recent ceremony, according to a news release.

Local organizations were honored, including Brunswick Family Resources Inc.; Brunswick Senior Resources Inc.; Cape Fear Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging; Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina at Wilmington; New Hanover Senior Resource Center; New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office; United Way of the Cape Fear Area; Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry Inc. and Share the Table Inc. The Red Cross and Salvation Army were also recognized.

Barbara Akinwole received the 2018 AARP Coastal Caregiving Award. Carole LeBlanc and Wanda Wooten were named the 2018 AARP Coastal Volunteers of the Year. AARP Coastal Unsung Volunteer Heroes were Robbie Buckles, Gary Ramsey and Dwight Willis.

Troopers Ashley Duff, Richard Kirk and Curtis Tripp with the N.C. State Highway Patrol were honored with individual awards.

Brunswick Habitat for Humanity and Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity were also honored during the event.

AARP and AARP Foundation, recognizing immediate and long-term challenges of Hurricane Florence's impact, donated $635,000 to various relief efforts in North Carolina.

Seven organizations received donations, including area groups Brunswick Habitat for Humanity, Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity and Southeast Association for Area Agencies on Aging. Each received $90,000 from the donation.

“The donations were in large part due to an outpouring of support from thousands of donors whose gifts were matched from AARP and AARP Foundation, allowing us help older adults get back on their feet in the wake of the disaster,” AARP North Carolina State Director Doug Dickerson said in the release.

The Greater Wilmington Business Journal and WHQR Public Radio were two media organizations recognized at the event for hurricane coverage. Local Wilmington retailers Diamond Food Enterprises Inc. and The Foxes Boxes were also honored.
