The Hampstead Garden Club recently presented a $1,200 scholarship to Cape Fear Community College Landscape Gardening student Juan Santiago, according to a news release.

“The Hampstead Garden Club hosts a wine and cheese event every year to raise funds for our scholarship award,” said Diana Dodo, president of Hampstead Garden Club, in the release. “This year we were able to award Juan a $1,200 scholarship to help him complete his coursework at Cape Fear Community College. Two of our members Val Trofimoff and Dena Seago chaired this event, and as always, did an outstanding job. We hope this scholarship will help Juan fulfill his dream.”

Since 1997, the Hampstead Garden Club has awarded a scholarship to one student each year who has completed their first year of landscape gardening courses, obtained a 3.0 GPA or higher, and has a need for financial assistance, officials said in the release.

To date, the club has contributed $28,450 in scholarship funds, fundraised from various events to CFCC students.
 
The landscape gardening program at CFCC relies on intensive, practical, hands-on training techniques in applied horticulture, officials said in the release. Coursework offered includes plant propagation, greenhouse and nursery plant culture, turf management, plant identification, arboricultural, diseases and pests of plants, landscape planning, maintenance and construction.
