The Grove At Live Oak Bank Wins Wood Design Award

By Christina Haley O'Neal, posted Mar 20, 2018

The Grove, the second building on Live Oak Bank’s Wilmington campus has won a WoodWorks award for excellence in wood design, according to a news release.

The Grove’s layout features an open office environment with employee amenities at the forefront, officials said. A double-height lobby connects the upper and lower floors, and glulam columns frame wide expanses of curtain wall to allow natural light and views.

The three-story structure blends into its natural site with a palette of wood, glass, and steel; the design emphasizes warmth and transparency, and the building’s boomerang form follows the lakefront and takes advantage of diffuse northern light. Outside, the wood siding will weather and gray naturally, blending into the landscape and matching the company’s nearby headquarters.

The team for the 56,000-square-foot project, included Woods Engineering as the structural engineer and Clancy & Theys Construction as the contractor. LS3P Associates was the architecture firm.

The Wood Design Awards, which celebrate excellence in wood building design across the U.S., are an opportunity to recognize leaders in the field, and to showcase buildings that "exemplify the attributes of wood that make it appealing," according to officials in a news release.

“It’s always interesting to consider what the winning projects say about the state of wood design,” said Jennifer Cover, WoodWorks’ president and CEO said in the release. “Part of that is understanding what drove the design teams to choose wood ... It’s exciting to see examples of innovative systems and technologies, but this year’s projects are a reminder of the many reasons building designers gravitate to wood."
