Joanne Allen, a physician with OrthoWilmington, has been elected a trustee for medicine of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

ACSM has more than 50,000 members and certified professionals worldwide, according to a news release from OrthoWilmington.

Allen is a board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist who is also fellowship trained in sports medicine.

“Being on the board is a huge honor because ACSM is the largest sports medicine organization of professionals in the world,” Allen said in the release, adding that the organization was instrumental in shaping her career.

Allen’s service in ACSM has included membership on the Olympic/Paralympic Sports Medicine Committee, Medical Education Committee, the Women’s Strategic Health Initiative, the Musculoskeletal Advisory Committee and the Weekend Warrior project. She has also participated on the Advanced Team Physician course faculty and the Internal Team Physician faculty, which she recently led to Argentina on behalf of ACSM, the release stated.

Allen has served as a team physician for the U.S. Sailing Team and on the U.S. Olympic Committee medical staff to the London, Beijing and Athens Paralympic Games, according to the release. She is currently team physician for the men’s soccer team at University of North Carolina Wilmington, where she is on the clinical/research adjunct faculty.

In a separate release, OrthoWilmington announced Neil MacIntyre, an orthopedic trauma surgeon with the practice,  received the Dr. Thomas Clancy Trauma Award at the 27th Trauma Symposium.

The symposium, sponsored by NHRMC and SEAHEC, took place earlier this year.

The award was presented to MacIntyre, an orthopedic trauma surgeon, because “he has enabled NHRMC to provide a high level of expertise in the management of patients from around the region with multiple, life-threatening injuries,” Thomas Clancy, founder of the award, said in the release.

MacIntyre’s profession involves performing intricate surgeries concerning multiple fractures, compound fractures, pelvic fractures and fractures near joints with the hopes of returning maximum function to the injured area. He has been a surgeon in southeastern North Carolina since 2011, and has continually provided exceptional dedication in trauma care, officials said.

His expertise and dedication proved worthy for this award, which recognizes “physicians who go above and beyond,” the release stated.
