North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory has appointed seven area residents to a variety of boards, commissions and councils over the past month, according to recent news releases from his office.

Gwen Baker was named to the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission, which is responsible for preparing and adopting rules that establish guidelines for the coastal areas. She will serve a four-year term, according to a recent news release.

Baker, from New Hanover County, is president of the federal programs group at CDM Smith, a consulting, engineering, construction and operations firm in areas such as water, the environment and transportation.

Pender County sheriff Carson Smith Jr. was appointed by Gov. McCrory to the N.C. Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System Board of Trustees. Smith will serve a four-year term on the board, whose responsibility is to administer retirement system laws for local government members of the retirement system, according to a news release.

Lindsey Roberson, from New Hanover County, was named to the Juvenile Justice Planning Committee of the Governor’s Crime Commission.

The committee advises the state board on administering juvenile justice and delinquency prevention grants from the U.S. Department of Justice. Members serve at the pleasure of the governor for terms of two years, according to the release.

Stephanie Smith, from New Hanover County, was reappointed to serve on the N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, a recent news release stated. Term length is three years.

Smith is the director of community engagement and impact in UNCW’s College of Health and Human Services.

McCrory has named Ilario Pantano, whom he earlier appointed director of the State Division of Veterans Affairs, to serve on the N.C. Governor’s Council on Homelessness, a news release from the governor’s office announced recently. Pantano lives in New Hanover County.

Council members advise the governor and the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services on issues related to the problems of homeless individuals or people at risk of becoming homeless. Term length is two years.

Retired insurance agent Dwight Flanagan will serve on the Brunswick Community College Board of Trustees and Charles Kays on the Cape Fear Community College Board of Trustees, the governor’s office announced in February.

Kays is a plastic surgeon at Wilmington Plastic Surgery.
