CFLC Receives Grants To Support Capital, Program Needs

By Joe Lowe, posted Jan 27, 2015
The Cape Fear Literary Council received five grants totaling nearly $39,000 in 2014, according to a news release.

Three of the grants: one for $25,000, one for $10,000 and a third for $1,600, were specifically awarded to the Raising the Roof campaign. The remaining money derives from an Instructional Merit Grant of $1,300 from the International Paper’s IP Foundation and a General Operating Support Grant from the Wells Fargo Community Connection Grant Program for a total of $38,900.

The $25,000 grant comes from an anonymous donor through the New Hanover County Community Foundation. The $10,000 grant comes from George Huffmon and Atlantic Neurosurgical & Spine Specialists P.A, and the $1,600 was donated by the Landfall Foundation, the release stated.

Last year, the literacy council embarked on its Raising the Roof building renovation campaign to fund renovations of a second building on the literacy council campus to provide more space for adult educational services.

Construction began in June and ended in September. The renovations expanded the CFLC teaching facility space by 75 percent.

Taken together, the five grants, “…created an effective learning environment to support adult literacy (AL) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instructional programs. CFLC’s objective is to maximize adult learners’ chances and likelihood of success in building their literacy/ language /math/computer skills so that they can reach the life goals they have set for themselves,” the release stated.
