CFPUA Announces Board Chair, New Members

By Staff Reports, posted Aug 2, 2016
Michael “Mike” Brown recently was elected chairman of the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority’s board.

New Hanover County officials appointed Brown to the CFPUA board in 2010, according to a news release.

Brown, vice president of Cape Fear Commercial and partner in the firm’s sister entity GHK Cape Fear Development Company, has served on several CFPUA board committees since joining it, including several years as chairman of the finance committee.

His term as chairman lasts for one year with the ability to serve two additional one-year terms, the release stated.

“For the past six years, I’ve been proud to serve as part of a hard-working board dedicated to helping CFPUA properly manage and operate high-quality water and sewer services,” Brown said in a statement. “I look forward to continue our work on behalf of our ratepayers and our dedicated staff.”

He said his primary goals are to continue the progress the agency has made “in the areas of customer service and financial management. I also want to ensure CFPUA is properly prepared to bring service to areas in need.”

Brown succeeds Patricia Kusek, who was in the post for the past two years and now will serve as vice chairman. Kusek, founder of Kusek Financial Group, has been a member of the CFPUA board since 2011.

“Comprehensive, long-range planning for the future has never been more essential,” Kusek said in the release. “I was proud to lead CFPUA in its effort to bring central water and sewer services to the U.S. 421 Corridor. They prime the area for long-awaited economic development.”

CFPUA officials also recently named two new board members.

Jennifer Adams was appointed by New Hanover County, and Rev. Charles E. Davis Jr. was appointed by the City of Wilmington. Both of their terms run until July 1, 2019.

Adams serves as the facilities and maintenance department head for Corning. She has worked in the environmental field for more than two decades and is a licensed professional engineer in the state. Adams succeeds Jim Brumit on the board.

Davis is founder and board chairman of On-Time Ministries Inc. Prior to his retirement from the New Hanover County Tax Department, he served for almost two decades in the City of Wilmington’s Public Utilities Management Department. He replaces Jim Quinn, who was the final original member of CFPUA's board.
