New Hanover Regional Medical Center recently announced two major gifts as well as awards for one of its staff members.

The NHRMC and the NHRMC Foundation recently received a donation of $75,000 for the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit at the NHRMC Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

The donation was given by John and Amie Monteith, in honor of their son Ryan, who has received care from the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit team at the hospital, according to a news release.

“The Monteiths have so graciously given back to the EMU team, and we are genuinely honored,” pediatric neurologist Sasidharan Taravath said. “Their philanthropy is a testament to our team’s dedication and commitment to our patients and their families.”

The NHRMC Foundation, NHRMC and Coastal Children’s Services recognized the Monteith family at a dedication ceremony naming the three Epilepsy Monitoring Unit rooms in their honor, according to the release.

The foundation also recently received a grant from the Willie Stargell Foundation.

On March 22, the Willie Stargell Foundation presented a $40,000 grant to the NHRMC Foundation.

The presentation took place on the third floor of the Willie “Pops” Stargell Dialysis Center at NHRMC. The grant will fund the purchase of two new dialysis machines and support continuing education for nephrology nurses, the release stated.

NHRMC also announced that Medical Library director Donna Flake (at left) recently received the Medical Library Association’s 2016 Lois Ann Colaianni Award for Excellence and Achievement in Hospital Librarianship.

Flake was also selected as a fellow, one of the association’s highest honors, according to a news release.

“It’s very thrilling to be selected by my peers. It’s an affirmation of my accomplishments in my job and throughout my career,” Flake said. “I hope these awards help further the mission of our hospital library in providing the best evidence-based information to the medical professionals of our region.”

The Lois Ann Colaianni Award for Excellence and Achievement in Hospital Librarianship, also known as the librarian of the year award, is given annually for contributions to excellence and achievement in the health information profession.

The association also recognizes four librarians each year as fellows for their outstanding contributions to the field of health sciences librarianship. Flake, who has been a medical librarian for 39 years, is set to receive the awards on May 17 at the annual Medical Library Association awards dinner in Toronto, the release stated.
