Since the pandemic, the debate around whether employees should be allowed to work from home has received a lot of attention. Jamie Dimon and Elon Musk are among the notable business leaders who have spoken out against it, citing fewer opportunities for collaboration, teamwork and socialization.
The other side of the argument is that working from home allows for more productivity, decreased levels of stress and more focus, along with a smaller ecological impact. But regardless of where you’re positioned in terms of this argument, there is very little debate the trend will continue.
With that in mind, here are some strategies to build influence when working from home:
1. Establish strong communication: Be proactive in virtual interactions with colleagues and superiors. Communicate clearly, listen actively, and contribute valuable insights to discussions.
2. Demonstrate expertise: Continuously develop the skills and knowledge that are relevant to your role. Share your expertise through presentations, blog posts, or mentoring opportunities to establish yourself as a trusted resource.
3. Foster relationships: Build meaningful connections with colleagues and leaders through virtual coffee chats, team-building activities, or social events. Actively participate in virtual meetings and collaborate effectively to cultivate strong relationships.
4. Take initiative: Seek opportunities to take on additional responsibilities or lead projects. Demonstrate your willingness to contribute beyond your core responsibilities and showcase your leadership potential.
5. Be reliable and accountable: Deliver high-quality work consistently and meet deadlines. Show you can be relied upon to fulfill your commitments and take ownership of your projects.
6. Seek feedback and act on it: Request feedback from colleagues and superiors to gain insights into areas for improvement. Use this feedback to refine your skills and demonstrate a growth mindset.
7. Leverage technology: Utilize collaboration tools, project management software, and other remote work technologies effectively. Demonstrate proficiency with these tools and help others navigate them when necessary.
8. Lead by example: Exhibit qualities such as resilience, adaptability, and a positive attitude. Model the behaviors you expect from others and inspire them to do their best work.
Remember, building leadership influence is an ongoing process that requires consistent effort and genuine engagement with others.
There are many other ways to build consensus and ensure that your superiors recognize your capacity for leadership.
